Endurance Supplements for Fighters-Athletic Edge Pack

By The Supplement Den - Tuesday, November 22, 2011

MMA fighters, boxers and wrestlers require sports supplements just like any other athlete, but they do have some different requirements that make them a special case. MMA fighters who practice jujitsu, Thai boxing and wrestling typically are concerned with endurance, since the sport is more about technique than pure strength power as in weightlifting. Strength and conditioning is of course extremely important but it is endurance and overall performance that is essential. Endurance supplements therefore take the centre stage, along with nutrients that help decrease cortisol and buffer lactic acid. Read More

To yolk or Not to Yolk

By The Supplement Den - Tuesday, November 15, 2011

One common question or comment I hear when in the gym or supplement store is “When making my eggs, should I be throwing out the yolk?” This is due to a lot of misinformation being spread regarding the yellow part of the egg commonly referred to as the “egg yolk”. Most people think the yolk is the “bad” part of the egg, when actually the opposite is true. The Yolk is the most nutrient dense, antioxidant-rich, vitamin and mineral loaded portion of the egg and contains high levels of B-vitamins, trace minerals, vitamin A, folate, choline, lutein, and other powerful nutrients important to the proper functioning and longevity of the human body. Funny thing is the egg white on the other hand is almost completely devoid of nutrition when compared to the yolk. Read More

Increasing Training Volume

By The Supplement Den - Tuesday, November 15, 2011

Training Twice a day used to be a regular thing for me back when I was competing more regularly in boxing or Muay Thai seeing as you would do your strength and conditioning in the morning usually and then your technical training and sparring in the afternoons. After all the concept of twice a day training has in fact been used by athletes from a variety of sports for many decades.
However, when I cut down on competing, mainly due to injury and time restraints, I cut back to training once a day. My gains were good but to be honest I had a feeling they could be better and it was at this time that I decided to start researching into training twice a day. This would be much different to when I was competitve in boxing as both sessions would be strength training and I was worried of over training. However, after doing some good research I came upon some very good articles and studies done by very reputable authorities in the sport such as Charles Polquion that stated that when protocols were stuck to and nutrition was maintained that the results would be exceptional. There is a famous old saying amongst athletes that "there is no such thing as over training, just under eating and under preparing".
