The DMAA Controversy

James Read Tuesday, May 15, 2012

The media has always been fascinated with the supplement and nutrition industry and have the habit of running completely misleading broadcasts and specials on whatever the latest big thing is in the industry.  Recently they have turned their attention to DMAA.  DMAA is a stimulant utilised in a high level of pre workouts and fat burners that has been used heavily for the past 6 years. In that time there has not been any negative health issues conclusively linked to its usage, however 2 soldiers that recently passed away were found to have DMAA in there systems and that’s what started this witch hunt. Now, I may not be a massive fan or advocate of DMAA BUT I believe the decision of what supplements and products we use is an individual’s personal choice and as long as dosages and directions are adhered to then I see no issue with these products. In the media coverage they showed people clubbing and using the drug for parties. This is obviously very misleading as the product is in no way advertised by supplement companies as a “party drug”.  Read The Full Artilce

How to Make Dieting Easy by Andrew

Info The Supplement Den Friday, April 27, 2012
Sticking to a healthy diet should be fun and exciting. If people say they hate their diet or feel down in the dumps there are ways to prevent this. Rather than depriving yourself of food, you can expand your range of healthy food choices and learn how to plan ahead to keep your meal tasty and exciting. People normally diet to lose weight but all of this can be achieved by still feeling great, having more energy, stabilizing your mood, and keeping yourself as healthy as possible.
Instead of being overly concerned with counting calories or measuring portion sizes, think of your diet in terms of colour, variety, and freshness. This way it should be easier to make healthy choices. Focus on finding foods you love and easy recipes that incorporate a few fresh ingredients. Gradually, your diet will become healthier and more delicious. Read The Full Artilce

Low GI Foods VS High GI Foods by Vlatka Dragic

Vlatka D Thursday, April 26, 2012
It is important to understand the difference between low GI and high GI foods when setting out your healthy diet. Not all foods are broken down or absorbed equally. There are foods which will give you more energy for a longer period of time and will make you fuller for longer....so why not make sure you are eating the right kind of foods?

Foods with carbohydrates that break down quickly during digestion and release glucose rapidly into the bloodstream tend to have a high GI where foods with carbohydrates that break down more slowly, releasing glucose more gradually into the bloodstream, tend to have a low GI. A low-GI food will release glucose more slowly and steadily, so low GI meals are perfect to have during the day as they will keep you fuller for longer and create consistent energy levels. A high-GI food causes a more rapid rise in blood glucose levels and is suitable for energy recovery after exercise. If you are having high GI foods for breakfast and lunch and wondering why you are getting lots of energy for a short period of time and then crashing down not long after, this is your answer!  Read The Full Artilce

How to Stay Healthy over Easter by Vlatka Dragic

Vlatka D Wednesday, April 04, 2012
How to stay healthy over Easter? Easy Easter guide to follow!

The Easter holiday is just around the corner! Although we all commit to dieting and staying on track, our choices do not usually end up being successful due to the massive amounts of Easter foods consumed during the holidays.

Start one step at the time. It is often overwhelming for a person to prepare and enjoy Easter desserts and fatty foods with their family and friends. It all starts with "I'll just have one" and often develops into "Hey, it's the Easter holidays, I deserve it". At the end of the 4 days break, some realise how much they actually ate over the holiday break and it all ads on to weight gain, then to another start of the diet and working off those Easter KG’s off! Realistically you should make it easier for you so you don’t end up having to train and diet harder!

Now you can definitely stop this process if you think about it carefully and PLAN. I always plan my meals, my daily structure, my exercise plans, my supplements. It always pays off! So why not try?  It all comes in moderation and if you think of Easter holidays this way, you will not be regretting your Easter break weight gain. I am planning on eating healthy and exercising every day during the Easter holiday but also giving my body a break and enjoying some Easter treats.  Read The Full Artilce

Vlatka’s Competition Blog – 10 days out of FIT X IFBB Bikini

Vlatka D Wednesday, March 07, 2012
Hi guys! I am now only 10 days out of my first show for 2012 – IFBB Bikini in Melbourne. It is a very exciting time for me and I have already gone through so much dieting and training past 12 weeks as a preparation for next weekend. This will be my first IFBB show but I will be stepping on stage again for IFBB Australasians in Sydney just two weeks after Fit X! As I am from Melbourne I am just really looking forward to catching up with all of my family and friends and having the best support I could have. For me, it is not actually about a competition, but about improving myself, having a positive attitude, inspiring others, helping other girls achieve their goals and catch up with my close friends in the fitness industry. I actually don’t like being judged on stage at all but I gained a lot of confidence after winning NABBA Queensland Sportsmodel Championship. I do competitions for fun and I love going through the whole process. It was an amazing experience winning NABBA and I was surprised by how much my body changed and how much I could improve between the two comps.  It took a lot of determination and motivation to prepare myself for the IFBB shows as I was so busy with work and helping my clients achieve their goals!

Enjoying your Greens by Jason Read

Info The Supplement Den Friday, March 02, 2012
Its a common fact that in the world today our lives are getting busier and busier with people having less time to do important things such as taking care of themselves. People are working longer hours and trying to fit in that much needed family time and when they have the chance.. training time. The main casualty of this is our diets, with fast food outlets or microwavable meals becoming the norm for most of us. Due to this a few products have hit the market with the promise of filling these gaps in our diet especially when it comes to our greens.  Read The Full Artilce

Super Breakfast by Vlatka Dragic

Vlatka D Monday, February 27, 2012
Breakfast has always been my favourite meal of the day!! Many people ask me what my breakfast consists of and how I start my day. Most people think they are having a healthy breakfast but they are not having enough or any protein or healthy clean carbohydrates to kick start the day!  If you're looking to lose weight or generally improve your nutritional status, add more fibre and protein to your breakfast. A healthy intake of dietary fibre and protein will help you feel full and improve your overall health.

Start having healthy breakfast that will change your body, increase energy levels and keep you fuller for longer. No more cereal with milk, donuts, latte’s, toast with jam etc. Most of these foods have too much sugar and uneven sugar levels in your blood often cause mood changes, tiredness, headaches and the need to eat even more sugar.

Quick oats with protein is my favourite breakfast by far. Oats have no sugar and contain more fibre than cereal or any other breakfast option. Oats have a higher concentration of well-balanced protein than other cereals. They take longer to digest in the system which helps with blood-sugar management throughout the entire day. They also contain a good balance of essential fatty acids, which have been linked with longevity and general good health, and also have one of the best amino acid profiles of any grain. Amino acids are essential proteins that help facilitate optimum functioning of the body. Oats are a good source of essential vitamins such as thiamin, folic acid, biotin, pantothenic acid and vitamin E. They also contain zinc, selenium, copper, iron, manganese and magnesium. Read The Full Artilce

Mundine- Man or Myth?? By James Read

James Read Tuesday, February 21, 2012

Mundine is attempting to continue his run of fighting sub-par opponents by turning down the mandatory title fight he has with the American Austin Trout in USA, despite saying time and time again that he wants the opportunity to fight for a title, yet he has turned down EVERY single title fight he has been challenged to by a legitimate American contender. He has also recently been featured in the media after challenging Danny Green to a rematch after already beating the over hyped Green many years ago. Danny Green is coming off two huge losses in which he was beaten badly by one aged fighter coming out of retirement and the other not even 6 months out of rehab after attempting suicide. Mundine himself has been consistently struggling with the low ranked opponents he has been fighting over the years since he began his career. I guess at least this time he won’t be paying an Argentinean nobody to take a fall but at least offering the opportunity to an Aussie. Mundine will go down in history as the champion who never was unless he steps up soon and boards a plane to America. . He is yet to win a legitimate title belt, although he uses every opportunity to call himself a world champ. The truth is Mundine has only ever won the interim belts. Basically a title that doesn’t really exist. Interim belts are invented for when a legitimate world champ is injured or can’t compete for example. They usually sit on a shelf gathering dust, unless a mockery of boxing like Mundine comes along and decides he is going to hood wink the public by wearing one around his waist and calling himself champion. Read The Full Artilce
